AFFORDABLE ARTFAIR HAMBURG

Description

For Fin DAC, SKIO, Alexis “Bust” Stephens and Sébastien Preschoux, figuration and abstraction are not opposites but points on a shared path. At Affordable Art Fair Hamburg we show how closely line, gaze and handwork connect their positions.

Every painting by Alexis “Bust” Stephens begins in abstraction. The brushstrokes follow waves and frequencies and at first seem almost chaotic. Only as the work progresses do dancing bodies emerge from them. Here, figuration and abstraction are not opposites but two states of the same picture.

Our selection for Affordable Art Fair Hamburg follows this idea. We show works by Fin DAC, SKIO, Alexis “Bust” Stephens and Sébastien Preschoux: three figurative positions and one graphic, abstract one. Each stands at a different point between the two poles, and they are more closely connected than they first appear.

Line and wave

Stephens sees the body as the result of organised waves: “We are not made of much, and yet everything pulses within us.” (translated) Sébastien Preschoux works with exactly this material, only without the body. His geometric drawings and paintings consist of oscillating lines that overlap and create colour gradients. In Stephens’ work, movement becomes a figure. Preschoux stays with the movement itself.

Gaze and void

Fin DAC and SKIO both start from the face, but treat the gaze in opposite ways. Fin DAC’s female figures look straight at you. The painted mask many of them wear across the eyes frames this gaze and intensifies it. In his strong, self-assured protagonists, traditional dress and symbolism meet a modern sensibility. SKIO, by contrast, deliberately leaves out the eyes. His fragmented figures merge with rigorously constructed architecture, and the empty space invites projection. Fin DAC’s gaze holds you, while with SKIO you complete it yourself.

The hand against the machine

SKIO paints every picture entirely by hand, yet the aesthetic often recalls AI-generated imagery. Preschoux’s lines look as if they were calculated by a computer. In fact they are made without any machine, with ruler and compass setting the rhythm: “One wrong line, and everything starts again.” (translated) Both draw on the Bauhaus, which stressed the fundamental importance of manual work. Fin DAC brings a similar precision from his years as a technical draughtsman, when he learned layout, perspective and scale. For him, painting is a meditative practice. At a time when images are produced at the push of a button, all four insist on the hand as their tool.
