Cities are built from modules. Window follows window, storey follows storey, facade follows facade. And yet we never experience them as a mere grid: we move through them, see them from changing angles, remember earlier views and layer them with new ones.
Two Views of the City
Jacqueline Hess and Pascal Sender both address urbanity and architecture in their work. Yet their focuses are almost opposite, and that is precisely what makes bringing their works together so exciting. Modul und Raum (Module and Space) shows both perspectives side by side.
Jacqueline Hess: Module
Jacqueline Hess graduated this year from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she studied under Prof. Eberhard Havekost. Windows and facades appear again and again in her works. Dark, opaque windows as a motif of longing contrast with bleak-looking facades, creating a peculiar tension. The monotony of our living space and its inherent calm lead to an almost meditative silence that invites us to reflect on our everyday perception. The artist points to the modular architecture of our urban surroundings, creating a metaphor for the modularity of today's ways of life: uniformity and repetition which, used positively, can become a source of freedom and creativity.
Pascal Sender: Space
Pascal Sender's works show urban landscapes that take on a multitude of perspectives within a single image. Different, time-shifted perceptions overlap to form a vision that he builds up layer by layer on his richly detailed canvases. The artist, who graduated three years ago from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Peter Doig, plays with time and space in his work. By shifting spatial perspective and moving artistically along the timeline, he condenses impressions into futuristic-looking urban scenes. Alongside painting, Pascal Sender also uses video projection and computer animation, which he combines into magical installations.
