Wolfgang Krell - Wummenizer

Description

A gun is, first of all, just an object: metal, wood, a particular shape. It is we who load it, with meaning. As a threat, as a symbol of power, or simply as an object of aesthetic exploration. It is precisely this act of loading that interests Wolfgang Krell.

Women and "Wummen"

Krell's subjects are portraits of women and pop-style side views of pistols and rifles. Although these two motifs could hardly be more different, he unites them through his very own artistic signature. The playful exhibition title Wummenizer brings both together: it combines Wumme, German slang for a gun, with the English word "womanizer".

Disarming

Krell works with a mix of spray paint, acrylic and pencil, also using stencils. The combination of dynamic tag styles and stencils with elements of contemporary painting dissolves the threatening character of the weapons. The portraits of women, in turn, parody the stern expressions of beauty photography with punky, colourful hairstyles. Krell's intense, contrasting colours set against white backgrounds catch the eye immediately and draw the viewer in like a magnet. His colourful, positive works strip the weapons of their negative connotations and the beauty motifs of their often inherent seriousness. Wolfgang Krell's visual language is disarming and makes his subjects pleasantly approachable. In Wummenizer, he presents works on canvas.
