Description

The Spanish artist SAM3 is known for silhouette-like murals that are often as tall as a house. His works are ironic, poetic, and provocative all at once—they address classic philosophical questions, challenge habits, and comment on current social discourses. By limiting his palette to just a few colors and employing a graphic, often purely linear style, his images develop an unusual presence: Despite—or perhaps precisely because of—their simplicity, they invite reflection and reveal their message only gradually. Typical of SAM3 are figurative elements in metamorphosis with their surroundings, recurring symbols such as roots and ladders, and figures with oversized heads. The Murcia-based artist paints worldwide and further explores his visual ideas in experimental stop-motion short films.

“Embrace” depicts two people in an embrace—one figure with a clear, open outline, the other formed entirely of barbed wire. Several interpretations unfold simultaneously from this simple composition. First, the interpersonal one: the willingness to overcome distance and difference, to draw closer, even if it hurts. Barbed wire separates, excludes, and inflicts pain—and yet it is humanity that overcomes these boundaries. A quiet reminder that boundaries are man-made, and that overcoming them remains just as much a human decision as erecting them. A second, inward-looking interpretation is equally obvious: the embrace as an act of self-acceptance. The barbed-wire figure can also be interpreted as representing those aspects of ourselves that we are reluctant to show or do not like. To embrace oneself, then, means accepting these qualities as well, rather than rejecting or repressing them. The color gradient from cool white to warm yellow-orange at the base of the facade visibly reflects this movement from distance to closeness, from harshness to warmth.

The work was created in 2024 in Düsseldorf as part of the “Kultur meets Euro” project.
