DOPPELDENK

Deutschland

Was bedeutet DOPPELDENK ?

DOPPELDENK - NUMBERS

Numbers count, measure, order and evaluate our world. We encounter them on every receipt, every clock, every screen. And yet they are far more than sober tools of mathematics.More Than a QuantityIn the exhibition NUMBERS, the artist duo DOPPELDENK presents works that explore the concept of numbers and figures. Numbers are more than just symbols for a quantity: they stand for ideas and concepts, and serve as codes and synonyms for events. At first glance, they seem to have a clear value, yet they are often misused for manipulation. Numbers are used to tell stories, and in design and graffiti they are graphic concepts. There is something magical about them, and almost all of us have a lucky number.A Universal LanguageNumbers need no translation. In a way, they are a universal language that everyone understands. DOPPELDENK also links numbers to the exhibition's location, Düsseldorf: this is where Kraftwerk recorded the album Computerwelt(Computer World) with the track "Nummern" (Numbers) in 1981.Painting, Light and PrintAt Pretty Portal, DOPPELDENK presents paintings, illustrations, light installations and a series of new prints.About DOPPELDENKDOPPELDENK are Marcel Baer and Andreas Glauch, who live and work in Leipzig. Their name derives from George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four: "doublethink" (in German, Doppeldenk) describes the ability to hold two contradictory beliefs in one's mind at the same time and to accept both. For the two artists, the term is a motto. At first glance, their works seem familiar, with neon colours and references to pop and subculture, manga and the 8-bit aesthetic of the 1980s. On second glance, however, they turn out to be subversive: the duo uses the suggestive power of mass-cultural symbols, pictograms and idealised characters to create humorous and critical commentaries on our present. Alongside painting and prints, their work includes sculptures and light objects.NUMBERS DOPPELDENKOpening Friday, 4 December 2015, 7 – 10 pmExhibition 4 December 2015 – 22 January 2016Pretty Portal Brunnenstraße 12 40223 Düsseldorf
