Jan Kalab "Inner Blue Glow" for "Enter the circle" show on display at Pretty Portal until 4th of Feb 2022. Please address your inquiries to info@prettyportal.de or send us a PM.
---------------
When Jan Kaláb was born in 1978 in Czechoslovakia, graffiti was not to be seen in the Eastern World. In the nineties, as the country was opening itself to western influences, he became one of the pioneer of the local scene, and founded an iconic crew, the DSK. Through Europe, he made a name for himself as Cakes. Next step to the Hall of fame: New York, where he made a big impression by painting whole cars in 2000, alongside with Key and Rome. Around the same time, he found a new way to push his own limits and challenge himself: 3-D Graffiti. Under the name of Point, he sculpted huge abstracts letters he chose to put in the streets and on the walls. The highest the better. This was another form of graffiti, in daylight, and without a spray, but truthful to the spirit of competition and innovation of the urban scene. Those sculptures lead him to abstraction, a path he’s been exploring through canvas from 2007, using acrylic painting and brushes. In the meantime, this admirer of Kupka graduated from the Academy of fine Arts of Prague. With time, his forms became more and more geometric. He used colourful squares and circles as an obsessive vocabulary for infinite variations around depth, time, and motion. Playing with circles conveyed organic imperfection and swing into his work. The artist is very invested in collective events. He’s the co-creator of a highly dynamic cultural space in Prague, called Trafačka. More than 160 exhibitions took place there from the opening in 2006 till the closure in 2015. On his own or collectively, the motto is the same: always getting higher, always inventing new forms – a tribute to the soul of graffiti.

Marc C. Woehr "N 49.904518 E 8.271108" for "Enter the circle" show opening this Friday. Please address your inquiries to info@prettyportal.de or send us a PM.
--------
Since he started as a graffiti artist in the 1980s, Marc C. Woehr has come a long way and developed an impressive artistic freedom. Like all street artists, he began with simple lettering, following on with large images several metres long. However, at some point he noticed that this hectic (because forbidden) work performed outdoors at night was no longer sufficient for him. He wanted to increase the element of composition in his work, and decided at short notice to move into a studio and to exchange the rough exterior walls for classical canvases. In the studio, his intensive preoccupation with urban space initially resulted in collages: compositions of photographs and newspaper cut-outs combined with painted elements. These collages too are reminiscent of the 1920s, evoking the Bauhaus and the DADA movement, and already hint at the aesthetics of wood relief.

Marc C. Woehr started his aesthetic production over twenty years ago on the street. Since then, the street as the smallest unit, architecture and the city as a large structure, as a matrix, have never left him. He has penetrated and examined them in all directions. The result is impressive: his wood reliefs have become his essential, characteristic theme. The preoccupation with the art of the early twentieth century has resulted in very contemporary works which in no way indicate that the artist started his career not with a brush or a crayon, but with a spray can in his hand.

This Friday we open the show "Enter the circle". 10 international urban artists showing their round works.
Address you inquiries to info@prettyportal.de

One of those artists is Sebastien Preschoux - a French artist known for his geometric drawings. The lines and shapes that oscillate in his works appear as if they were generated by a computer. A key feature that sets his art apart from many contemporary aesthetic concepts is his insistence on handcraft. He is inspired by the values of the Bauhaus movement, which manifest the fundamental importance of manual work.
When you watch Sébastien Preschoux at work, you feel the tension between the serenity in which he brings his lines onto the canvas without hurry and the beauty of an infinitely precise gesture. Inevitably the association with Kare-san-sui, the zen garden, arises. Without impatience, Sébastien Prechoux depicts the movement of the drawing in time and lets the material unfold in space.

In a natural and spontaneous relationship with the materials, the environment, the time and the work that is put into them, Sebastien Preschaoux shows in real time what is needed to create something that is now mostly left to machines. He emphasizes the value and the possibilities of the human body as perfect tools. The concentration of all senses lives in his works, the complete focus on one point. The mantra “man versus machine” lives in his pictures.
With his approach he deals with our contemporary culture, in which technology prevails and in many places displaces and replaces people. #urbanart #streetart #Graff #collecting #abstract #contemporaryart #graffuturism #artshow #duesseldorf #weloveart #postvanadlism #weloveart #circle #art #painting #instaart #artoninstagram #graffiti #instagraff #interiordesign #collector @sebastien_preschoux

We are very happy to announce the upcoming show with so many exciting artists.
„Enter the circle“
feat. CHAZME, ETNIK, Jana&Js, Jan Kalab, Marc C. Woehr, Patrick Hartl, Pavel Ryzko, RAWS, Sebastien Preschoux, Theo Lopez

When talking to a literary friend about Nietzsche’s Zarathustra, of course, the well-known dialogue between Zarathustra and the dwarf came up, which deals with time, space and the moment.
“Everything just lies,” muttered the dwarf contemptuously. All truth is crooked, time itself is a circle. ”
The circle is often referred to as the mother of all forms, the perfect form, i.e. the platonic solid, the basic structure that has arisen directly from nature. Nevertheless, most of the pictures in contemporary art are painted on rectangular formats, as this form represents a more concrete boundary of the picture, a more closed surface. The circle has no corners, an infinite number of sides and no interior angles. A circular shape as a painting surface represents a new challenge for many artists.

In the exhibition “Enter the circle”, a selection of artists who work graphically abstract and belong to the direction of graffuturism, take on exactly this challenge.

Some of the participating artists use the shape of the circle as a delimitation for their works on a regular basis, some occasionally, some for the first time.
In their work they reflect a wide variety of ideas and concepts. The artists find inspiration for their works in dealing with colors and shapes, in nature, in architecture and urban landscapes, in typography and graffiti. This creates visual languages that could hardly be more different. Some works gush with liveliness and spontaneity, some are clearly constructed and incredibly precise.

Guy Denning "Don‘t cry"
Acrylics, Charcoal and conté on collages paper
on display until 25th of November at "Passing through" show.

Address info@prettyportal.de for inquiries.

Guy Denning was born in North Somerset in 1965. He has been obsessed with visual art since childhood and started painting in oils at the age of eleven after receiving a set of old paints from a relative that had grown bored with them. Through the 1980s he was repeatedly unsuccessful in his applications to study painting at degree level but continued painting whilst studying art history with the Open University and learning painting technique from older painters he knew in the west of England. From 1992, he exhibited across Britain. Since 2007 he has also exhibited in the United States of America, Germany, Italy and France. His paintings have been shown in numerous solo and mixed exhibitions. His work is held in several public collections, including the Politics Department of Bristol University, the Political Science Department at Galway University and the MAGI’900 Museum of Contemporary Art, Bologna.

Guy Denning’s work combines a traditional painterly style with a contemporary, punk-inspired, twist of embedded collaged and stenciled text. This aesthetic, blended with a political narrative, has found Denning a loyal audience in the collectors of urban art.
